AN ENTREPRENEURIAL business partnership has set up shop in Derbyshire in the shape of The Dog Bakery, in a deal secured by Innes England.

Acting on behalf of a private landlord, the property agency has let the retail premises located in the former renowned George Stafford black pudding shop at Belper Road in Stanley Common.

‘The Dog Bakery’ was founded in 2010 by Scott Latham and Janine Rose after recognising there was a need for natural and healthy treats for dogs due to the amount of ‘junk’ food available on the pet market.

The pair initially ran the business as a side-line to their day jobs and sourced government backed funding through Erewash Partnership via the start-up loan scheme.

As business grew, an expanding order book and the desire for a retail outlet led to taking a plunge from a cottage business into commercial premises.

Owner Scott said: “We started out in a fully refurbished a catering trailer to produce our products but quickly realised that this wasn’t big enough to produce the volumes we needed to make the business viable. It was at this point we started looking for new business premises and came across Belper Road, instantly knowing this was the building we needed after seeing that it had a factory at the rear.

“The shop has now been open for a few weeks and we hope to have the factory up and running within the next month with lots of new and unique natural treats being manufactured to the highest of standards. Our aim is to be the best dog treat manufacturer in the UK.

“We currently have four product advisors in the UK ready to start selling our treats in their areas as soon as the factory is signed off and this will grow rapidly once we are producing.”

Mike Walmisley, surveyor at Innes England’s Derby office, acted for the landlord in the deal. He said: “It is rewarding to see these premises undergo a new lease of life, which are ideal for the start-up business. Scott and the team have a unique offering and are already off to a solid start. I wish them continued success.”

The shop also stocks a range of pet supplies catering for all pets including exotic pets. The Dog Bakery is the sole Derbyshire stockist of CSJ working dog food, which is produced by Ceri Rundle, Phil Rundle’s daughter from One Man and His Dog television fame.
